Missions

This church does not exist for itself but for the sake of the world for which Christ lived, loved and died. What we do here in Worship, Study and Fellowship is for the purpose of equipping us to serve the world in all its brokenness and need. First Presbyterian Church supports many missions and ministries, including the ones described below.

Fellowship of the Concerned
Started in 1962 by men in the community who wanted to meet as an ecumenical group across denominational and racial lines with a desire to do the work of Christ. There is no limit to what they can accomplish. They desired to improve race relations and to assist the elderly. The men meet on the second and fourth Sundays of the month at 6:45 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. All men are welcome to join. They sponsor the annual Mayor's Prayer Breakfast and an annual Chili Dinner in November to raise funds to us in assisting the elderly.

Liberty Ministerial Alliance
An alliance of the Liberty area churches and their pastors with a ministry of care to travelers in crisis. The pastors meet once a month for fellowship and encouragement. They also sponsor the World Day of Prayer and the Community Thanksgiving Worship Service.

Hillcrest
A transitional ministry providing a Christian environment that helps homeless families become self-supportive, self-reliant contributors to society. It accomplishes this by providing temporary housing, classes and support for all members of the family.

Love INC (Love in the name of Christ)
An affiliate of Worldvision
A cooperative effort between churches, their members and service agencies by acting as an umbrella clearinghouse for all the institutions in Liberty who help serve the needy with the idea that there is no duplication of services. Love INC receives requests by phone and refers people to the most appropriate source of help for them.

Habitat for Humanity International
A non-profit ecumenical Christian housing ministry. Habitat seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. The mission is building simple affordable and decent houses that are then sold to selected qualified low-income families who live in substandard conditions. Each family contributes at least 300 hours of "sweat equity" toward the building of their house. Houses are sold at "no profit, no interest" to the selected families. The success of Habitat depends on its volunteers to build the houses.

Habitat for Humanity KC
Started in 1979, this affiliate has completed about 150 houses on inner city sites with 675 people living in them.

Heartland Habitat for Humanity
Started in the early 1990's, this affiliates mission is to build simple, decent homes and communities in Wyandotte, Leavenworth and Johnson Counties in Kansas, and Clay County and Platte County in Missouri, while following biblical principles.

City Union Mission
An evangelical Christian ministry committed to sharing the Gospel and meeting the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of people who are poor or homeless. They provide warm beds, nutritious food and a place of safety for the poverty stricken and homeless.

Special Presbyterian offerings
First Presbyterian Church participates in the following special offerings:

  • The One Great Hour of Sharing monies are shared among the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program and the Self-Development of People.
  • The Peacemaking Offering monies are divided with 50% being forwarded to the Peacemaking Program of the General Assembly, 25% is used to support presbytery and synod peacemaking efforts and 25% is retained by the local congregations for the support of their own peacemaking ministry.
  • The Christmas Joy Gift Offering monies are split with 50% distributed to the Board of Pensions for assistance programs to retired and active church workers and their families. The other 50% supports the eight Presbyterian-related racial ethnic schools and colleges.
